Newcomer Youth Program

Connect and Support

PCHS Newcomer Youth Program serves newcomer children and youth (ages 8 to 25) that are new to Canada with an immigration status of Permanent Resident, Convention Refugee or a Canadian Citizen for the first 3 months after obtaining their citizenship.

The newcomer program at PCHS is seeking to build, encourage civic engagement, spread awareness, and provide support in various areas. PCHS is here to connect and support newcomer children and youth through 1:1 supportive counselling, group and monthly themed sessions with areas of focus and integration.

Our Services

Through our workshops and events, we provide a safe virtual place for newcomer children and youth to participate
in a diverse and inclusive environment in the following areas:

Academic Engagement
Facilitate information sessions about navigating through education system, post-secondary options, career paths and funding opportunities such as grants, awards and scholarships.
Employment Support
We provide 1:1 support and group sessions to newcomer youth who are seeking employment, providing assistance with resume/cover letter, interview preparation, and employment search tips/tools.
Information Sessions
We host monthly themes in which we canvas our workshops around a variety of topics, our content provides newcomer children and youth with resources, creativity, open dialogue, learning and growth.
Art & Crafts
Creative art expression is important, and by recognizing that we organize varies art workshops which are interactive, fun and self-reflective
Leadership Development & Civic Engagement
The Youth Advisory Committee (YAC), is made up of newcomer youth across the Peel Region, with lived experiences to the services we provide. This committee, will have access to ongoing professional development trainings and courses.
Skill Development
We provide monthly event series; newcomer youth participate in a 4-week session on variety of topics that will gain them a certificate of completion along with enhanced knowledge and reflection piece.
Networking
Diversity and inclusion workshops for newcomer youth to connect with the community, peers, facilitators, and volunteers. Promoting a safe space to engage with other youth and build healthy relationships!
Volunteer Opportunities
Youth and mentors can now volunteer with the Newcomer Youth Program, to inquire more about the available opportunities, please contact the youth workers directly.
Parent & Youth Relationship
We provide supportive counselling and information sessions based on the ideology of bridging the gap between parents and children/youth, and a safe space for collective open conversations.
Afghan Youth Support Summary
This is a new program in the developing stages at PCHS designed to provide services and supports for newcomer Afghan youth. The Afghan Youth Program will provide Afghan youth a platform to be empowering with creative activities, resources, opportunities and connectivity. This will be accessible in English and Dari!
